BLS Provider Course Description
Here's how the BLS Provider course works.
Basic Life Support – The BLS Provider course teaches both single-rescuer and team basic life support skills for application in both prehospital and in-facility environments, with a focus on High-Quality CPR and team dynamics. This course is for healthcare providers, workforce employees and students in healthcare training programs who need BLS, CPR and AED certification.
Here’s what you’ll learn in the BLS Provider class.
- Describe the importance of high-quality CPR and its impact on survivial
- Describe all the steps of the Chain of Survival
- Apply the BLS concepts of the Chain of Survival
- Recognize emergencies and when somone needs CPR
- Perform high-quality CPR for an adult, child and infant
- Describe the importance of early use of an AED
- Demonstrate the appropriate use of an AED
- Provide effective ventilation by using a barrier device
- Describe the importance of teams in multirescuer resuscitation
- Perform as an effective team member during multirescuer CPR
- Describe how to relieve foreign-body airway obstruction for an adult, child and infant
Participants in the BLS for Healthcare Providers course usually consist of individuals who have a job-related “duty to respond” to emergencies in the healthcare or work environment. This course is recommended for, but not limited to medical professionals, public safety and security workers, health and fitness instuctors, and anyone who needs an American Heart Association BLS Provider Certification.
This is an instructor led, and classroom based course scheduled for 3 hours (usually runs shorter). Upon successful completion of practical and written testing participants will be issued an official American Heart Association® certification (eCard) valid for 2 years. Your eCard will be issued within 48 hours of course completion.
BLS Provider Course Requirements

- This course is for first-time students, renewals, or students with expired certification.
- American Heart Association BLS certification issued within 48 hours after course completion.
Your AHA BLS certification (eCard) will be valid for two (2) years, expiring on the last day of the same month you take the class. You will be able to access your BLS Certification immediately once you claim your eCard in your American Heart Association online account. We will assist you with claiming your eCard at the end of class if required.
